Appreciate Jimmie Johnson's greatness

Like the title says... Anybody else wins multiple NASCAR championships and the fans love him...

How do you describe greatness in sports?

Most of us rely on using names like New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots to illustrate distinction. We often refer to the names Lombardi, Maris, DiMaggio, Aaron or Bradshaw with reverence in a show of respect for their accomplishments.

In stock car racing, it’s Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt who are the first to come to mind, or if you are a longtime fan, you might say David Pearson or Darrell Waltrip.

On Sunday, Jimmie Johnson earned the right to be included among the greats of NASCAR, winning an unprecedented fifth Sprint Cup title in a row.

Well I'll be honest here. I am a Dale Earnhardt fan always have been and always will be. I used to love it when he was winning championships and races. All the fans either loved him or hated him, there wasn't any middle ground. He was a great race car driver, that being said Jimmie Johnson has become a great race car driver.

JJ deserves to be talked about in the same way we talk about Dale, Cale, Darrel, Richard, Jeff and a few others. You get my drift, he has made his mark on the sport and earned my respect.

Do I like him? Not particularly. Do I enjoy seeing him win constantly? Nope.

Does he deserve more respect than he gets? You bet. He has been THE best driver for the last five years, and I don't think people give him enough credit. In a few years, it'll be cool to be able to say we witnessed this.

I think the biggest deal most fans of other drivers have is that JJ has won it 5 years running and they are tired of not seeing their guy win.

You'd THINK somebody else would have gotten the job done in 5 years... but JJ and team have managed to put together an unbeatable team year after year.

Next year may be different... or will it?
