I agree it's cool that GM made the larger displacement engines that are still somewhat fuel efficient... but I don't go along with your "they last longer" theory. That's a bit of old hot rodder folklore. In the business I am in, I have seen many many 300,000 4 and 6 cylinder engines... right along with some V8s. Proper engine in the proper vehicle with a little maintenance will last a LONG time.

Not so fast there.

What I am saying is that if you take a 250HP, 2.0L I-4 and a 250HP, 3.0 V6, the V6 will last longer.

If you take a 365HP 3.5L V6 and a 365HP 6.2L V8, the V8 will last longer.

If you take a 90HP, 770CC I-2 and a 90Hp 1.9L I-4, the I-4 will last longer.

It's just common sense.

An engine only has so much to give...and the closer you get to that threshold, the shorter life it will have.

Somewhat logical but not an absolute fact. Your point could be valid if all of the different sized engines were in the same sized vehicle, but a smaller engine will last as long as a larger engine any day if it's matched to the right load. Of course I do see where you are coming from.

Lots of things chalked up to "just common sense" can't be backed up by science.
