Should I get a cam or headers first?

It's been FAR too long since I've been around these parts, but hopefully you guys won't mind me rejoining again! :drinking: Anyway, after I get the cash flow going again this summer, I'm hoping to purchase a few needed mods. :naughty:

First on the list is a Truetrac differential; seriously, I NEED IT—open diffs are a road hazard! After that, I'm trying to choose between a cam or some Doug Thorley Tri-Ys (which I've gotten some great advice about from nubuilder ). I'm really leaning towards a cam, more specifically this cam or one similar to it, since I think it would benefit me more for daily-driving with loads of off-idle torque. Of course, I also would like to get a TransGo 4L60E-HD2 shift kit. Hopefully I'll finally have a Corvette servo on my way in a few days, too. I think I'll be able to complete the list, but I might have to pick and choose between the cam and headers in order to not blow all of my money.

Oh, and here's a better picture of my truck with the Alcoa Tahoe Z71 wheels I got last November, though it's still just an iPhone photo:

Don't mind the window chalk, this is the best picture I have of it since I halfway detailed it. And yes, I need a real camera.

Oh, and what would you guys think of a full-on Z71 conversion (à la the GMT400 Tahoe Z71) with the body-colored grill, bumpers, and fender flares, and the front bumper with fog lights? Another pointless dream, but I have been considering it since I love how those Tahoes look.

I think I'd do headers before the cam, just because you'd want the headers to take full advantage of the cam anyway. That is a baby cam, though.

I just figured that since that cam puts all of the power and torque down low that it'd work well enough with the stock bricks for the time being. It may not be fast, but it'll have a shitload of torque, which is what I want. :fingersx:

Headers first, but if you ever plan on hitting the mud, I recommend you keep your stock headers. In my experience, every time I hit the mud my heaters warped, after my 4th replacement I promised never to hit the mud again.

Well, I might go through some mud once in a blue moon, but not very often. These headers are made from 14 gauge steel, so hopefully I shouldn't have any issues with them warping in any situation. What kind of headers do you have?

3 Banks headers and now I'm on my second JBA.

Do the headers first then the cam. Either way it sounds like you've got good plans in store for the truck.

I voted for the cam.

Just to be different.

But what the others are saying makes sense. I think the headers would be the first move I made.

Headers then cam, by the way, I'm running Doug Thorly headers too, never had a problem with them, and they have been wet, my fender well gap, is like 6", so any time it rain's, which it rain's a lot here in western Oregon, they get wet from road spray, when I installed my headers, I didn't noticed much difference, until got above 3K rpm, then it was a different truck , I would highly suggest, if you are looking for performance, going with long tube headers, you will get more bang for the buck, and it will complement the cam.....my two penny's!!
