It probably not wired right-iv got a volt meter on the way tomorrow-i'm glad to hear it's a 12v system already-the alt. does look funky hooked up-so what u think?Where does the volt reg. plug in on the alt.?i'm guessing the bolt on back of alt. goes to pos. on battery-and i'm assuming the volt reg. wire to the pos. on the battery is ok???Could it get any easier to explan-lol

Yes, you are good to go with factory wiring for 66. You are 12 Volt and alternator. I had a 62 that was 235 inline 6 with a generator. I converted it to V8 and a real alternator. It was 12 volt from facory in 62 but still using generator. Do you have the 2 wire plug coming out of a harness that plugs into the back of the alternator?? For some dumb reason I am wanting to say it should be a blue wire and a white wire. The red heavier guage that bolts to the alternator is your hot. Probably goes to the ignition side of the fust block and makes its way to the battery, or it may also go direct to the battery via harness. Really need to find a diagram of some sort. Even a generic one will work for you. That truck is simple, I just don't have one here to follow along with and use as a template. So I'd be doing all kinda lying and guessing to tell you what colors go where and how.

It's jerry rigged all over with diff. color wires-iv got two plug in on top of alt and one bolt on spot on back of alt.

You're not being a pest. But I do feel confident wiring is done wrong somewhere, and the grinding is the rectifier brige in the alternator. One way to find that out, disconnect the wires from the back of the alternator and see if the noise goes away. And if the doesn't do it, then disconnect the hot one too, maybe its going to the wrong place. Also keep in mind, don't be suprised if this wiring was wrong, its very possible you could have shorted out your voltage regulator and/or alternator. Lets hope not, but is sure possible.

OK, that is definatly part of the problem right there. That alternator is doing nothing. Its not charging the battery, its not providing power, you are running off the battery charge only, and yes, probably low voltage. That is not a single wire alternator at all. Those 2 prongs on the back need wire from the voltage regulator to tell the alternator to turn on and charge or supply power. This is a stupid alternator, not a smart one. It has to be be told what to do. You know, kinda like a woman.

OK LADIES, was jus kiddin !!! For Real !!! I know way better than that.
