I need to tow a triple axle toy hauler that has a GVWR of 16,500 lbs. That puts it above the rated capacity of gas engine trucks, and the pin weight is above the capacity of single rear tire one ton trucks. It has to be a 3500 dually 4x4 in order for it to work for what I need. I've got some ideas of what I want, but I have not commited to anything yet. I like the styling of the new Dodge HD the best, followed by GMC, then Chevy, and with Ford bringing up the rear. I like that the Dodge does not need urea injection. I don't like that the new GM and Ford diesels do need urea injection. I'm nervous about an all new engine from Ford, as they have had teething problems with prior engines. I've owned both Cummins and Duramax trucks before, and had good luck with both.

Which would you prefer, and why?

Here's the trailer

if you intend to do a dpf delete in the future and get crasy amounts more power go gm. otherwise dodge is a good choice.

i know the ford is a new engine and trans but i think the`ve really done their homework. we`ll wait and see i guess. :D

a F450 Pickup would look BFA pulling that rig. :naughty:

I did some price checks on these trucks. The F450 would be an awesome truck, and is actually better suited for towing that big of a trailer than the rest of the trucks would be. But when optioned out with the options I want it would have an MSRP of $55,000+ The F350 and GM 3500 would cost $48,000 and $51,000 respectively. The Dodge Cummins can be had for $44,000 if I chose one with the ST trim package that has a black grill and painted bumpers, but the "ST preferred equipment group" that still gives it cloth seats and carpeted floors. A Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl colored Dodge looks nice with a black grille and painted bumpers (it looks mean as hell, in fact). The GM trucks look "ok" with that trim package, but I would probably opt for the chrome bumper trim level with the GM trucks, and that bumps the price up over $50,000. The Ford looks hideous with black grill and bumpers because even the headlights are different, and that trim package is not even something I would consider with the Ford.

So Dodge wins with the price war. And I know a Dodge dealer that tells me he will sell me any truck I want at invoice price, with any rebates that are in effect at the time being subtracted from that.

I've been reading on the cummins forum though, and it seems like they have a lot of problems with their soot filter becoming plugged. Once it is plugged the dealer has to manually clean it out, which is not covered under warranty, and may cost up to $1500. How often dose this happen? Diesel trucks seem to be plagued with lots of problems. I shouldn't have started reading the diesel forums.

Does the lifetime warranty cover the Cummins? If you're not worried about warranty. You can always delete the DPF and get a tuner so you don't have any codes :dunno:

we have had our 09 R5500s have dpf problems, but the guys idle for very long periods and run high idle belt driven air compressors. if your daily trip to work is short i don`t recommend a unit with the dpf, or get rid of is as scott has mentioned. it has to get hot as hell and run for extended periods to get properly cleaned out, or restrictions will arise.

I would not be using this truck as my daily driver, which is good because the drive to work is only 2 miles. This truck would sit in the garage all week, and only come out on weekends to tow either a tilt bed transport trailer (4000 lbs max), or tow the fifth wheel in the picture above (16,500 lbs max). Do you think I would ever have soot filter plugging problems with that kind of use?
