5th wheel questions

I wish I had done more research. I bought on a whim, and had to do something. Fast.

If I had to do it all over again, I would not have bought a slider. The cuts on the front of my 5er don’t really require it for 90% of maneuvwrs. I have used it once for a sharp jackknife park job. Still, I would not do it over.

I would get a B&W, the heaviest mofo I could afford. I say this because now I want a heavier trailer

did you you have factory prep to start with or did you start from scratch? also, remind me...what are you currently towing gvwr/pin weight wise?

From scratch. I did the entire install myself.
I have a 16k Curt slider setup, and I average 14-15k. I scaled it last year on our 2 week trip to Montana, and it weighed 15.5 fully loaded with water with a 2400 pound pin.
Air bags are a must.

I will go to a 20k B&W when I upgrade to my 34 foot Grand Design

So, the gvwr isn't freaking me out, but the 2900lb pin weight is.

Is it safe to assume that when the bikes are in the back, some of the weight ends up cantalevered off the pin? or am i smoking the good shit?

This is all going to be moot for a while longer. The numbers on the deal aren't anywhere close, and i'm not in a hurry.

You are correct. And a 2900 pound pin is nothing with air bags. I have violated the GVWR sticker many times. Go by your tire ratings. That rear axle can take it all

EDIT: Are you thinking of installing the universal rails in the bed to mount the 5th wheel to, or the pucks?

I have long lived, and believed the hard and fast "rule" that late model HD trucks with AAM rear axles are only limited by the tire rating. I have overloaded these things so many times with air bags, and they perform without failure.

You will be just fine.

You should see my buddies 42' XLT toyhauler with the smart car in the back. He pulls it with a SRW Dodge, and has a 4000 pin weight

Oh no, I'm not doubting you that it would be fine. My situation is just on hold due to the offers from dealers being *insane*. numbers had been right, I would have been telling you guys about the fifth wheel hitch i had ordered this evening.

This is what I was thinking of based on what i had found so far and your suggestion:

B&W companion

I like that as I don't want rails in the bed when the hitch is out of the truck. As i'm not well versed in this stuff, I'm not sure what all the options are.
