You think NASCAR can give Kyle a second exemption to get him into the chase if he doesn't make top-30? Chances of that are fairly slim, but it seem like if he doesn't win he's finishing pretty poorly. It doesn't look good if the driver with the most wins during the season doesn't make the Chase, especially if he kicks it into high gear again and starts winning Chase races.
Nope. He'll make it. Even with today's "bad" finish, he gained 10 points on 30th, leaving him only 13 out of 30th.. They still have 5? 6 races between now and the start of the Chase? He'll make it into the top 30 and then Joe Gibbs will sit him down and tell him "run GOOD ENOUGH to maintain your position or maybe gain a little, but DON'T BE STUPID and knock yourself out of the top 30!"
NASCAR has been taking enough flack already, with people claiming these new aero packages are "designed to make Kyle run better" and "they shouldn't have given him a waiver" (even though it's IN THE RULE BOOK that they can give a waiver for medical reasons), etc..
TO ME, they should do away with the waiver all together. If you're in the top 30 and you've won, you're in.. If top 30 is too "lax," make it top 25.. I've always thought it was kind of silly that you "have" to run every race to be Chase eligible.
If you're good enough that you don't "need" to run EVERY single race and you can get a win
and score enough points to get high enough in the standings, missing a race (or a few) shouldn't matter..
Tom Brady won't be "ineligible" to go to the Super Bowl because the league is going to make him miss a few games over "Deflate-gate." So, why should NASCAR say Kyle can't be in the Chase if he meets all the criteria? IMO, the waiver should have never been a requirement. That's a STUPID thing that gives NASCAR the flexibility to at least APPEAR to play favorites. They should eliminate it and simplify the rules, in that regard.
Got the points? Got a win? You're in. Done deal.
