correction on test light findings

Sorry folks... what I meant to say was that when I probed the red wire side of the solenoid connector I had voltage ( bright light ) not dim . That is what led me to believe the solenoid was defective .

You were getting power to the plug @ the vent solenoid with the key on? I never did. Maybe it's wired in sequence with the purge solenoid somehow? (where I had a broken wire)

broken wire at purge valve

Yeah Dart Boy , I'm guessing in your case that the pcm didn't see a return signal from the purge valve because of the broken wire . Which the pcm then would not allow current to the evap solenoid . That's what kept me confused , with the computer logic of that evap system until I watched a 33 min. video on you tube by this tech school instructor scanner danner on how to check the evap solenoid.

I gotta admit that I was surprised when the test light lit with key on , still not understanding the computer logic at that time. It was a good feeling that I could do that myself and save some greenbacks. Thanks for your input, it did help .

fuel gauge error

Well... my new challenge is figuring out why my fuel gauge reads 1/4 of a tank over actual fuel level . It wouldn't move under a 1/2 tank until the previous work mentioned was done . Then it started reading under 1/2 tank as what appeared normal . Really strange ! I'm going to take it under a 1/4 tank an have a gas can in the bed and drive it until the fuel light comes on . Not sure how much gas is left at that point , but we will see . The fuel pump / sender ass'y was replaced with a/c delco part two years ago .

Need to replace your fuel pump needle/sensor in the tank, best thing is get a whole pump kit with sensor & needle.

From what I understand this po449 code is a common occurance across the board . It pertains to a bunch of vehicles and can be caused by many things . The trick is to isolate the problem and proceed form there . Get the code / codes scanned at an autoparts store and they should supply you with a description / possilbe cause's and repair solutions for a fix .
Hope this helps ease the pain .

i'm finally getting around to fixing this and buying the parts today. it looks like my rig has had the "update" done but the remote filter is mounted directly to it with 1" of hose and zip ties, rather than up high somewhere. my local Napa stocks the "original" Suburban part for $27 (p/n 2282567) and for the Silverado they list what looks like another updated version of the part that doesnt look like the one on my rig, it's actually smaller with a smaller port on the inlet side. and that one is $97.
(EDIT: apparently looking at the purge valve, but the vent valve they offer has some kind of pig-tail adapter for the harness.)
i'm going the cheap route with the 'Burban part for now. if it goes bad again i'll weigh the cost against life expectancy before upgrading at 4x the cost.
thanks for a great thread!!:fingertime:
