97 K1500: Reverse Issues

Starting have issues using 2wd reverse on unpaved flat surface. Works fine on hard surface as of now. When put it reverse theres a 3 second delay before I start moving. I hear the everything spinning during that 3 second delay then all sudden it will move. I hear the driveshaft and trany turn then goes to a vibration then it will move. I just got new tires(General Grabber A/T2 on the truck yesterday. Thought it was doing cause my tread was low on my old tires. Maybe it always done this and never payed any attention to it til now.

If your drive shaft is spinning but your truck is not moving, you definitely have a problem.

Works fine 4wd. Wheels will spin if stomp on the gas pedal in 2wd.

I suggest that you do not stomp on the gas pedal to make it go, you probably have a rear end going out.

If it moves in 4WD then the tranny is still good and the transfer case is making the front do all of the pulling, when in 2WD it won't go because it has something broken in the rear end and it is probably a tooth or 8 broken in the ring gear and you stomping on it is making it worse and you could possibly have to replace the whole rear end if you keep it up and blow something through it.

I probably broke a tooth or something when I pulled tree stumps out of the ground. I was jerking the whole truck hard in 4wd enough to hear the horn go off. It started after pulling oak tree stumps out of the ground. It moves fine on hard pavement. Only does on grassy and gravel ground in reverse.

Jack the truck up and pop off the differential cover. Do a little inspecting to see what's going on. A little silicone and some gear oil is all it will cost you. But open it up and see if you have broken teeth, with the rear end supported on jack stands turn the driveshaft and listen for noise if you don't see anything obvious.

Well then by all means, keep doing it...


A broken tooth in the rear end can quickly turn into no teeth and a whole new rear end housing if that broken piece is just in there tearing it to shit.

Dave, a 1997 K1500 is not really something you want to be yanking stumps with. FYI
