Due to gross overloading of the piddly 4 speed (I knew it was going to happen, but oh well ), I managed to cook my transmission fluid with one trip with my trailer, so now it needs changing... It's still pink-ish, but it smells like wood... My transmission temperature peaked at 217*F.

Ambient temp was around 95*F, otherwise I think it might've survived

My problem is that the transmission pan doesn't have the model stamped into it... So I don't know if I have a 4L60E with a deep pan or a 4L70E.

Is the filter the same for both?

I do plan on buying an additional transmission cooler for the time being...

No sir, I have a 5.3, so I'm leaning to having the 4L60/65... I miss the days when GM stamped their stuff

On a side note, fluid coolers are a LOT cheaper than I thought they'd be!

You have a 60 if you have the 5.3. To my knowledge, gm does not put the 65/70 behind the 5.3. Those went in denalis, SS, and Vmax trucks.

Thanks Bob!

I was pretty sure that I had the 60, but it's nice to have a second opinion

Now just have to baby it until payday and I can order the new fluid, filter, and cooler

If it survives... It's already shifting inconsistently... Some days good, others not so good...

The 4l60 is not a bad transmission. Taken care of there is no reason it can't hold up extremely well.

A 4l80 is great, but more work and more expense. And, IMO overkill for most half tons unless you age getting ready to add a bunch of power and race it. A 60/65/70 should hold up just fine with the weights a half ton was designed for.

Rebuild it, stick a shift kit and a servo in it and get a good trans cooler.
