I got a 93 k1500 silverado from my step father. We had to put a new radiator and water pump and all that goes along with it cause the water pump broke and the fan ate the radiator. We got it put back together works great.

Now I'm fighting the truck not getting very good gas mileage at all and he (my son) says its been dieing at stop lights and what not. I think it has a bad EGR valve so i pluged it to see if that would help and it has not helped.

Were should i start?

Have you checked the timing. I would start with a good tune up and go from there.

Did you disconnect the wire under the dash when you set the timing ?
  1. I got this from Autozone's site.Disconnect and plug the vacuum line at the distributor on models with a carburetor. This is done to prevent any distributor vacuum advance. On fuel injected models, disengage the timing connector which comes out of the harness conduit next to the distributor, this will put the system in the bypass mode. Check the underhood emission sticker for any other hoses or wires which may need to be disconnected.

Harbor Freight has a cheap timing light for 15 bucks that will get the job done, or check if Auto Zone has one in the lend a Tool program. You won't need any fancy computer stuff for that truck.

If you haven't done it already , replace the fuel filter.

Done that too. When i do the paper clip trick the code comes up as low voltage to the fuel pump and or EGR.
I know it's going to be a pain, but I would check the ground wire for the pump. I should be some place close to the sending unit on the tank. They have a habit of corroding and losing connection.

Have you pulled off the EGR and looked in it? I had a blazer once that started running like shit all at once and after running out of things to replace I pulled the EGR off and it had a big chunk of carbon stuck in it.
