Why? During the winter it doesn't get light until after 7 and it's dark by 5. That's 14 hours of dark

About 12 hours is our extreme end in the Winter here... and that's horrible if you ask me!

I have a 34 gallon tank, and I'd use up a little over a half of it driving that far on the interstate.
