I am having serious problems with me 03 F150 XLT FX4 .... It has the 5.4 , 4 wheel drive and I believe the 4r70w tranny . Starting out if I took the over drive off it seamed to shift better but it got where it wouldn't go into forwards gear without high rpm ...than like I natural dropped it . At first as long as I got it going than it would shift ok then it got to where it don't want to go into any forwards gear and will slip real bad going down the highway . Reverse seams unaffected . Truck now has 140,000 miles . fluid red and not really bad burnt smelling . Any help would be appreciated . Fluid and filter ?? Something electrical ? :dunno:

Something that doesn't look like it belongs.

Any little parts or heavy shavings would be a pretty good indication of a problem.

I guess first is verify you have the proper amount of fluid.

Since you have reverse, I would say there is a valve sticking or not working. There should be a valve that allows pressure to the forward drum. I would check electrical connections going to the transmission. One may of been unplugged. The worse case, is to pull the pan and remove the valve body and check the valve. Be best to find a schematic of the transmission or the valve body . If this all checks out, it will be an internal failure in the transmission.

Did you just purchase this truck? Can the dealership prove with physical log or receipt that the work was done? I dont know the laws where you are at, but can the dealership be held responsible to repair this at their cost?

Sadly, I have had transmissions die in every Ford company sled I have had in the last ten years. Explorers, Truck and Taurus. Most were great vehicles other then the trans replacements, although my current Taurus has had a bunch of other failures PLUS a transmission.

It may well be rebuild time.
