So i've never changed tranny fluids in this truck before 102k miles. Its a 98 chevy 1500 wt 4.3 with the 4l60e. the book says i have to jack the tranny up with a block and put a block between the crossmember and tranny and removed the center mounting nut on the tranny to drain the tranny. I notice this book says alot of stupid shizzit. but do I really have to jack up the tranny?

there may very well be issues with access to the rear bolts on the pan, and you will have to remove the trans mount, i think you can either remove just the mount on the crossmember, or just as easily unbolt the mount from the trans and remove the crossmember and mount as one peice. if its 4wd, just jack the t-case up, but for 2wd that may be more tricky, pick a solid part of the tailshaft to lift on.

Be safe about it too.

I'm not familiar with that specific model. Clancy sounds like he has it nailed. More will chime in I'm sure.

Yes, be safe and use jack stands and block the wheels. :)

Unbolt the trans mount first before you put any pressure on the jack, once the nuts or bolts securing the trans to the cross member are loose, put just enough pressure on the jack to raise the trans. Then finish unbolting the cross member from the frame and slide it out of the way or remove it completely. The exhaust Y pipe may also be in your way and need removing. One strong word of caution: When the pan is unbolted drop it straight down and move it away form the trans. Don't drag it out away from the trans. I have read so many threads about guys that accidently unplugged shift solenoids while removing and replacing the pan. Just be patient, take a good look at the wires in there when you get the pan off. You'll see what I mean then. Good luck.

I see what they mean. I have to unbolt the trans mount center nut to jack up the tranny and place a block inbetween the mount and crossmember.
