TPMS sensor question. 2007 GMC Sierra

Wanna get new shoes for Fred. The TPMS sensors are five years old (like the truck) and working perfectly as they always have.


I also have a spare set from another vehicle that were removed when it was new. They are several years old and have been sitting untouched in a drawer. My questions are:

• How long do the batteries last?
• Do they use battery power when sitting idle or do they activate only when moving?
• Should I replace them with the new tires?

Google answers are all over the map - which leads me to believe that many "experts" are pulling answers out of their ass.

Anybody know the real scoop?

From what I've read, GM says they have a 10 yr, 150,000 mile life. If its not acting buggy, I would save them for later.

I agree Eric. I am tempted to leave them alone and just install new tires. I just didn't want them to fail a month after that new tires were installed.

NOBODY has any real solid advice. Tire stores simply replace them as a precaution, but that's an expensive thing to do if they still have a few years life left.

I know they try their best to sell you some service on them anytime you replace your tires. I had one guy quote me an extra 100 bucks for "service" when I was buying tires for my wife's Altima.

Just do what I did when I bought new wheels. Buy some sensors from Jenna

My car is 6.5 years old...
Starting about 2 years ago, I have had one TPMS after the other fail.
All of them have now been replaced.

So I would say 80,000 miles or thereabouts, would be time to start thinking about them.
Since Fred sits in the garage all the time... You would go by TIME not mileage...
Probably at least 7 or 8 years for the ones on Fred.

The ones that have been in the drawer are probably good for 8 to 10 years, because they are not transmitting very much.
