Toyota Prius hybrid demand rises as gas heads toward $5/gallon

Often wondered why anyone would buy a new fuel efficient car and spend $30,000.00-$40,000.00 for the sake of saving money on gas.Add in the car payment,insurance & yearly DMV fees and how much are you really saving?I'd venture a guess and say not much.

I haven't had a car payment in years and see no reason to get one.

I'd bet that "most" people who would trade a vehicle in to get a new Prius are probably trading in one car payment for another..

Gas Guzzler Payment $$$ + Fuel Expense $$$$$$$$$

Prius Payment $$$ + Fuel Expense $$$$

They really just save on fuel and that is about it.

If you have no payment then I see no point to buying a new car and making payments on it. Financially at least it makes no sense...

You couldn't make me drive one of those. What I want is one of those older bare bones cars that get great mileage because they weigh next to nothing, not one that gets great mileage because it can shut off the engine and run on a few hundred pounds of batteries.

The lightweight cars are also pretty quick. I think Amanda's little suzuki swift could whup the crap out of my truck up to 75 and that is only because it can't go any faster. I'll probably end up buying it from her when she upgrades. Everything has already been replaced so it is technically a new car.

Agreed. And, depending on how far along you are in paying off the vehicle you have, it probably still makes more financial sense to pay off what you have and deal with the MPG it gets vs. trading for something newer, that gets better mileage, but you'll be paying on for years longer.. (Yes, I was mentally looking at myself in the mirror when I wrote that. )

Once gas hits $5 a gallon, if it gets that high, most will forget the issues of the Volt and it will be back on the sales track.

I like the Chevy Cruse. I talked to several on the Cruze forum and the Eco in a standard shift some are getting close to 50mpg out of it.

My fiance's 06 civic got 37 mpg on average when she bought it, and I added an injen intake and magnaflow cat back to boost it up to 40.5 average. I also tinted the windows and put some decent 18s on it so it's really not a bad looking car.. We always take that on any trip over 50 miles because it's much better than the WRX's 24 mpg

I just don't see why anyone would want an ugly looking car like the prius when there are so many other options out there

I'd rather get a cheap beaten-out dirt-bike than a Prius. Wouldn't be so easy to carry too many supermarket bags but could still go to places where a Prius would never get even close.
