Tire gate help

hey whats up everyone, quick question....i think you guys might know the answer but what i want to do is build a tiregate for my f150 but i just have an issue on what the joints are called that goes on the corner edge. It seems to be a similar joint as my jeep had on the lower control arms....

can you tell what joints are put on the edge so it can swing in and out?

also do they sell those joints separably?

i have extra flex joints at home but i dont think flex joints would work for something like this, would it?

You could probably build a similar "hinge" using a piece of round stock which was the correct diameter to accept whatever sleeved bushings (such as for control arms) you could find locally.

Find the type/size of bushings you like (make sure you use some with an internal sleeve, otherwise the poly bushing will distort with the weight of the tire on it).

Then find the pipe/round stock that is the correct diameter for the bushing to fit tight into.

Then begin welding the gate up from the mounts.

That would be my suggestion, at least.


I think this will look great on your truck when you get it completed! Wish you were closer, I would have you build some stuff up for mine.

If you can find a poly bushing (like the ones used in the control arms, shock mounts, etc.) that seems like it is the right size, buy it and build from there. I suggested using a bushing with a steel sleeve insert because the weight of the tire gate will distort the bushing after a while.

Once you find a bushing you think will work, find a piece of pipe/round stock that it will just barely slide in to. Cut some pieces of the pipe the length you need to accommodate the bushing you are using. Once you have those pieces cut, you can start fabbing the rest of the gate, working from the mounts out.

I don't know if that makes much sense.....I am having a hard time describing my "vision" of how it would work into actual words.

There Ahhh.... Just use some Heim joints

I am not sure if Heim joints would have too much flex to support the tire. I thought about that too.
