We have had a couple of these in the past, just lower cost big ones, and the last one I had was a big Thule model that we used on our move down from AK, on top of the Tahoe. It worked great. We had the back end of the 'hoe open to the Mastiff, and put all our luggage in the carrier. I sold it shortly after we moved here.

Does anyone have any input on the newer Yakima, or Thule higher-end carriers in the 12-14 cu ft size? Travelin' with the dogs makes it a necessity.

I am looking at the Yakima Skybox, currently. https://www.rackattack.com/cargo-luggage-racks/cargo-boxes/yakima-skybox-lo-carbonite/

I have some input on the cheaper ones, and I won't go there again. It is mainly the latches, and use in cold weather.

Have you looked at these? They tilt, so you still have access to the cargo area.

I've been interested in them... But I want someone else to buy and try first.

Yes, but I have 2 giant dogs that need to hop in the back hatch. Fuggers refuse to go in and out of the side doors :D2
That wouldn't move enough to open the hatch?

It looks like it moves plenty to open the hatch, it just wouldn't work for my beasts. The car top thing is pretty slick. The wife just hates driving around town with it on. I left the last one on for like 2 weeks, just to torture her

I have a good buddy that does a ton of traveling and off roading. He loves his Yakima boxes. He has a couple, but not the one you posted. He said he doesn’t do much skiing and feels that’s about all it is good for.

That is good info, they do appear to be more for the skiers, don't they?

After toying around with a few boxes I went with the Thule Motion XT XXL. I had a spreadsheet with every brand and model, and felt the Motion XT hit the sweet spot in usable volume. Some big volume boxes sit too low (good for skis, snowboards, etc), where others are taller but not as wide (I was factoring in strollers, and even fitting kids bikes).

Shopped around and got that huge box for $600 shipped... just had to patiently wait for a deal so show up
