I had a tonneau on my Frontier, and it was just as functional as an SUV if not more so. You can also get a bed extender and leave it flipped inside the tailgate under the tonneau so that stuff doesn't slide all the way to the front of the bed.

I think the crew cab is the way to go! they are more comfortable than a tahoe
