How to Replace the Serpentine Belt in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado
A serpentine belt is an important part of any engine. The serpentine belt is so-called because it generally runs multiple accessories and "snakes" around under the hood. On a Chevrolet Silverado, the serpentine belt drives the alternator, power steering and water pump for the vehicle: Generally, the V6 model will have one serpentine belt for all components, while the V8 will have a separate belt for the air conditioner compressor.
Tools You'll Need:
• 15mm Wrench and a 3/8” Drive ratchet and short extension.
• Replacement belts , I used Dayco # 5040378, for AC and 5060930 accessory drive.
1. Step 1
Find the auto-adjusting belt tensioner pulley. The belt tensioner can be located using a belt routing diagram, which you should find on the radiator support.
2. Step 2
Use your wrench to rotate the bolt on the belt tensioner clockwise to release tension on the belt.
3. Step 3
Slip the old serpentine belt off of the pulleys and take it out.
4. Step 4
Using your 3/8" Drive ratchet and short extension, rotate tensioner for AC Compressor clockwise and remove the belt. Check the idler pulley for play and replace if needed. Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley and around the compressor pulley, using your ratchet rotate the tensioner clockwise and seat the belt.
5. Step 5
Use the belt routing diagram again to route the new belt. If you can't find a routing diagram in your documentation, or under the hood, you can use the Dayco product site where belt routing diagrams are in hyperlinks next to the belt description. Enter make, model and year to get the right routing diagram.

6. Step 6
Rotate the belt tensioner again to allow the belt to be fully installed.
7. Step 7
Make sure the belt is well seated on all of the pulleys.
8. Step 8
Run the engine and observe to make sure the belt is installed properly.

One note: My truck is equipped with a 145 amp alternator and it looks like this. If yours looks different you have the 105 amp alternator.
