With as good as oil technology is these days, I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the reputable brands. Just use whatever you want, change it regularly, and you should be fine.

Mobil1 got my 4.8 to almost 200k (and it still looks absolutely phenomenal inside), so that's what I'm running in the 6.0. Don't f*ck with what works.

I have used RP in my LR's tranny, transfer case, diffs, etc. I haven't had any problems. But from the studies that are done: http://www.enhancedsyntheticoil.com/Royal_Purple_vs_AMSOIL.htm It doesn't hold up as well as Amsoil. I only use this in the '04 Rover. It isn't safe to use with real rubber seals/gaskets/etc in the old ones.

I dont want to start a pissing contest but I can tell you this. Any study paid for or sponsored by a company is going to be swayed in that companies favor, period. I'm not saying Amsoil is bad, BUT, if you check the API website, the only oils of theirs API certified are the XL line up which almost no one uses, and it is not what is used in these comparisons.

If you check most car & truck owners manuals, it will say something to the extent of; use only API certified XXX (CI-4, CJ-4, etc...) of an appropriate weight and grade... blah blah blah.

All of Royal Purples oils (not counting the race only ones) are API certifed. The oils Amsoil brags about, are NOT API certified. That being said, its your vehicle to do with as you wish.

Completely agree with sponsors studies. I put RP in the new LR and non-synthetic in the old ones. I haven't had any problems.

You betcha
Rotella T6 Seems to be the best value for the money. You can get a gallon at Wally-World fairly cheap and it holds up to 8000 mile oil changes without any deterioration in protection. I don't have any issue with Mobile 1 synth it's just my LS2 seems to eat it like candy more than other oils.

I've used it for the last 20k miles with no problems. Blackstone did an analysis and said everything looked good at a 7000mile change.

They were pushing it pretty hard up there, and on my last new Silverado that I got at Lithia in Anch, I actually did my first 2 oil changes with it, and sent in my oil samples to Stavely.

The sample data came back friggin scary! That is when I found out about the GM spec issues...and I switched. Oil samples still sucked, even on my beloved Valvoline. Turns out my lifters had failed. They gave shit when I showed them the sample data, because I had used RP. I fought it for a bit, but they did give in, GM had issues with the '07 AFM lifters. I ended up getting them changed down here, after Lithia gave me so much shit. I was just going to let the bitch blow up and see what they said

You used to hear about Royal Purple all the time and how it was the best but now it seems like the market has majorly shifted in favor of AMSOIL. Just wondering if Royal Purple still offers a top quality product. I can get Royal Purple for significantly cheaper than AMSOIL's advertised prices (haven't checked if they actually sell at advertised prices or not), in fact a local source has Royal Purple slightly cheaper than Mobil 1. If it's still up there I figure I will pull the trigger on it when it comes time for the first oil change. If not I will keep shopping.

P.S. what happened to Red Line, used to hear about them a lot too but nobody talks about them anymore. Maybe because it's so expensive :dunno:

Again, I miss a thread that I shouldn't have. You guys need to stop posting so late at night. My butt is in bed and by the time I get up the thread is gone off the list when I get up.

Royal Purple is a good oil. If you can get it for the same cost as or less than Mobil 1 then that is a steal. It is still priced around here for $7.80 a qt. It is a quality synthetic. The difference between it and AMSOIL's main flagship oil ASL is that RP does not recommend extended drain where AMSOIL does. For the average user and 4 to 7k oil changes it is a good oil.

Redline seems to be geared more to the racer and the loyalty user. It was in Advance Auto around here but has been gone now for a few months. You can get it through Summit Racing and Jeg's I thing still.

Advertisement is expensive. RP pays out a huge amount I'm sure to Spikes Powerblock. They use it on the set as well as it sitting on the shelves in the background.

That sucks, I haven't heard anything about using it in Fords thankfully. The only thing in my report was there was a little excess metal deposits, but I think that's from spending 4 years going to school in fairbanks and all those cold starts at -40F.
The one good thing about slowdotna is I know a couple guys at the dealership and a couple others that have their own shops, so I don't get screwed too badly.

Oh hell it's great oil, had nothing to do with my issues. I have no idea why GM didn't stamp it then. It may have changed since. Just a bunch of BS. I would have bought my truck in Soldotna, since I was there so often, they just didn't have the truck I wanted.
