Reverse Slam

Not talking Basketball here. This is the second time my truck has slammed into reverse violently. Both times it has happened I was pulling up, stopped and tried to put it into reverse. I pause, wait a second or two before putting it into reverse, then WHAM! Do I have to wait even longer to avoid this? Is it normal? Or is my transmission starting to go? Truck has 34,000 on it, and has sat all winter long, maybe driven a handful of times in 3-4 months.

Anyone else experience this? It's pretty jarring, the noise it makes is rather jolting. Hoping no damage was done either time.

I take it that this is a random thing? These transmissions are prone to a hard shift between reverse and drive is the RPMs are up at all. After my BB tune, if I lift at all between my one-two shift, it bangs hard into second. Other than that I have never had any issues.

Same here. Just means I have to stay on the gas until it shifts.


Umberto, this is odd. I've never heard of someone having problems after sitting. If it continues, I'd be worried about breaking the sun shell.

If this is something new that started I would look into having the transmission serviced. It would slam because it's getting too much shift pressure, but since nothing has changed it could be something just starting to go out.

Think it's worth taking to the stealership? I'm sure they will blame it on the lift/tires/gears/tune.

I do have to say, it's done this randomly on occasion (I think it's happened a total of 5-6 times in 34k miles) from day one in stock condition, but not so violently like it has now.

Worst case, if it goes I get to install a heavy duty transmission, what would I gain in upgrading?

Jim, yeah, my truck also shifts crisp/hard into second since the tune as well, that's non related and not an issue IMO, but rather a good thing.

Why don't you put a call into your tuner and see if he has heard of this before?

Do you happen to know what the engine RPM was when it happened?

Not a bad thought, but those jackasses haven't figured out how to get prevent the dash lighting up from the bigger tires/tune.

Most of their tunes are for Corvettes and the like, so not sure they've had this happen before, unless it's not isolated to lifted trucks only.

Truck was def warmed up. In both cases, I pulled up, once in front of my driveway, once in a parking lot, then proceeded to shift into reverse after pausing 1-2 seconds. Would waiting longer help prevent this? I find it hard to believe it's caused by not waiting long enough inbetween shifts.

Pretty disheartening it would go this soon since I baby my truck. Like I said, from day one I noticed this issue on occasion, but it was a much much softer jolt when going into reverse gear.

Approx how much is a heavy duty trans? Parts? Labor?

The hesitation almost sounds like a valve-body issue. Have you ever had a fluid flush or filter change in the tranny?

Another thing to check, although it doesn't sound like what you are describing, would be the u-joints. It is possible that one is shot and binds a little when driving, then lets off when you hit reverse. Again, I would doubt that, but worth looking at.
