no, you dont want the screw driver to damage the threads.

its a split sleeve. so with the nut and clamps off you wedge the screwdriver in the slot and twist it which will open up the sleeve a little..... basically you're undoing what the clamp does...

Do we have a pic to look at? I can get one later if needed but might have one online I can find

im on my phone... so if you find a pic post it up.

we might be talking about different sleeves.... does yours lock on each side with a nut thats threaded on the tie rods? or is the nut on a clamp that goes around the sleeve?

Is this the same style as yours?

Almost. I don't have rack and pinion so I have inner and outters

here's an old pic and you can see the lock nut for the inside of the sleeve and the inner tierod end. It's all that I have now

ah ok, thats not a split sleeve.

make sure the threads match up!

before threading it on, fill it up with some PB-Blaster and let it sit for 10 minutes....that should clean out the threads pretty good.

Figured that would be my only option. I was using wd-40 yesterday cuz I couldn't find my pb but I'll go ahead and soak it this time. It was threading just slowly
