If its geared and tuned right it's a great idea. Dodge isn't exactly known for their transmissions but I love the fact that they are going for it.

This is pretty common place for the domestic market to follow the trend of the luxury market and 7+ speed trans have been standard in that market for a while.

I love the GM 6 speed and the 7 speed in my wife's ride is perfect.

They already have the 8 speed in the Charger with the 3.6 Pentastar, and I have only heard positive things about it. I have not driven one, so I don't have any personal opinion on it yet.

IMO, these trucks (all of 'em) need to be put on a diet more than they need more gears.. But, improvement is improvement. They can put 'em on a diet later, I guess.

How?

How what? How to put 'em on a diet? How 'bout go back and look at the previous generations of trucks that didn't look like they were compensating for something by trying to look like Mack trucks.

Dodge started this trend back the 90's, I believe, with the bigger-bulging hood. GM and Ford followed, because they couldn't be shown-up by the competition.
IMO, in stock form, all of these trucks are bigger, bulkier, and ride higher than the "need" to.. Lose some weight and the MPG's will go up, which is why Dodge is sticking the V6 w/ an 8 speed in there..

But, like I said, they can put 'em on a diet later.. That should be "easy" MPG increases, at that point..

Maybe. I suppose there are a few pounds you could shave off of the sheet metal. But a lot of the safety features and creature comforts can't (or won't) be removed. Wasn't there a guy on here a year or so ago that was going to great lengths to reduce the weight of his truck? And IIRC he had trouble getting enough off to make a difference.

Maybe it was 'the site that shall not be named'

Maybe it was..

I guess buyer's perceptions of what they want/"need" will have to change before they can make (and successfully sell) less physically imposing trucks. That probably won't happen until gas prices have been manipulated into being in line with Europe..... :uhoh:
