Questions about the rear main on my 318

And that is why I ask

Got the rear main in my the engine. But before I button it all up I have question. According to the manual, I do not use silicone on the ends of the rubber seal. That contradicts what a lot of people have told me. It also states I am to apply silicone directly to the “rope” seal. I used a new rubber seal, so can someone please clarify? Do I apply sealer on the ends of the cap where the rubber tips are?

I would use just a little dab on each end.

That is what I thought. But the book states not to do it at all. I think that is for the rope seal though.
