Draenor has pretty much covered it. The color isn't so much the issue. Being black also is a good sign that it is keeping the inside of the engine clean by keeping all the contaminates in suspension and creating sludge. Some of the Toyota engines are considered sludge monsters but the ones in the 4 Runner are not, so that is a good thing.

An oil analysis is the way to go if you are really concerned. More than likely they didn't put a full synthetic in but a blend.

Since you changed it out and put Mobil 1 in, it will be interesting to see the difference in the oil when you change it again. Just curious as to what brand oil filter did you use?

I put a Mobil 1 oil filter on there. The dealer usually throws a Toyota filter on there but like I said, this one was a PITA to get off. I dented it up a little bit with the filter wrench trying to get it off. My wife called and complained about the filter but the Service Advisor told her it has to be that tight to ensure it doesn't come off. Whatever :loser:

I have always used Mobil1 in my truck and Royal Purple in everything else and like the results. I usually throw a K&N oil filter on my truck as well. I did really like the Fram with Teflon (black filter) but I can't find them anymore around here. When I take it to the dealer, they always use Mobil1 and I bring them a filter to use. Plus I know the guys in the quick lube bays and I trust them and I also hang out with them for a little while and chat while they do the work.

Stay away from the Fram oil filters. Filters are to have a light coat of oil on the ass gasket and hand tightened and turned just a 1/4 more. There should be no need for a wrench.

I totally F-ING agree about the filter being hand tighented + 1/4 turn. That's why I think those A-holes at the dealer probably never changed the filter from the last time she had it changed. The pisser is the damn filter is right in your face when you open the hood. How hard could it be!?! Plus, she never checks to verify (but I bet she will now) and I never know when she has it done so I don't pay attention BUT you bet your ass I will now!

Thanks for the info on Fram. Haven't used them in about 8 years because I couldn't find the Black Fram so I started using K&N and usually do or Mobil1 in the truck.

How much did that Mobil1 synthetic oil and filter cost you?
I used to use Mobil1 Synthetic and that usually cost me about $60 or so for 6 quarts of oil and filter. And that was changing it about every 5k miles. I now use Amsoil XL series oil and the Amsoil Ea filter on both my truck and the wife's car. It usually costs me under $100 for a 12 quart case of oil and both filters. Plus that oil is rated for 15k miles. Plus I am also supporting Nick, one of our site sponsors by going thru him for my oil.
I am saving money, and helping Nick at the same time, so its a win for both of us.
To be honest I don't really remember. I dropped a bunch of $$$ that day picking up her front and rear brake pads plus ordering her Bilstein front struts and rear shocks. Out the door ran me about $600 (the freaking Bilsteins were $400 for her car including shipping). I think the brake pads were around $100 plus all the other crap I bought while in the parts store. I would guess around $45 for the oil and filter. Her 4Runner takes 5 1/2 quarts so I bought the 5.1 Qt jug and another single qt bottle. I've dropped a ton of money this year on her 4Runner and it's only 5 years old:wtf?:
I told the STealership I was about to drive this over to my local GMC dealer and trade it in on a "real" SUV because they make theirs last a little longer than the factory warranty. That service advisor didn't like that but I don't give a F!!! It's almost paid off and I am going to add a picture of my middle finger with the last payment I send them.:pfingers:

Every time I go in there with her for anything the sales people always flock around her and tell her they have a great deal for her and they always ask her if she is ready to trade it in. My wife is very quiet and polite but I think she just tasted the shit sammich they keep feeding her.

I think the next time they ask her anything about her 4Runner, new words will come out of her mouth other than, "No thanks, I am quite happy":D.

Get ready sailors, I think you are about to blush!!!:eek:I may have to YouTube her response.:jester:
