Oil Question here...

The color of engine oil does not dictate age. It is the absorption of carbon from combustion. How many miles are on the 4runner?

Best bet would to do an oil analysis.

Tough one. At those miles, a mild black is ok. Unless something is wrong and some blow by is getting past the rings.

Still an oil analysis would benefit to see what the conditions of the oil is. Run a change and verify what oil is being put in. Once the next change is due, perform the analysis.

Thanks John. I changed it myself this time with Mobil 1 Synthetic and used a Mobil1 oil filter so I'll check it out when I change it in 5,000 miles. I plan on pulling the dipstick once in a while to check it as well. I still think the dealer pulled a fast one because they pull it way back in the bays where you can't see them work. They tried some BS with the waterpump on this damn vehicle last year and I called them on it so they replaced the pump and the belt under warranty.

My wife and her family are diehard Toyota and "overpriced Toyota" (Lexus) supporters but I think I almost have the wife transformed into a Tahoe or Yukon driver.

Draenor has pretty much covered it. The color isn't so much the issue. Being black also is a good sign that it is keeping the inside of the engine clean by keeping all the contaminates in suspension and creating sludge. Some of the Toyota engines are considered sludge monsters but the ones in the 4 Runner are not, so that is a good thing.

An oil analysis is the way to go if you are really concerned. More than likely they didn't put a full synthetic in but a blend.

Since you changed it out and put Mobil 1 in, it will be interesting to see the difference in the oil when you change it again. Just curious as to what brand oil filter did you use?

I put a Mobil 1 oil filter on there. The dealer usually throws a Toyota filter on there but like I said, this one was a PITA to get off. I dented it up a little bit with the filter wrench trying to get it off. My wife called and complained about the filter but the Service Advisor told her it has to be that tight to ensure it doesn't come off. Whatever

I have always used Mobil1 in my truck and Royal Purple in everything else and like the results. I usually throw a K&N oil filter on my truck as well. I did really like the Fram with Teflon (black filter) but I can't find them anymore around here. When I take it to the dealer, they always use Mobil1 and I bring them a filter to use. Plus I know the guys in the quick lube bays and I trust them and I also hang out with them for a little while and chat while they do the work.

It's $24.97 at full price right now in Indianapolis which is where I was when I'd find it in store, on sale for $20-22/5qts. if you still think it's bullshit, I'd suggest writing Walmart's customer service to let hem know they have the wrong prices on their site.
