Mark, We got the part and Clancy just replaced it, when he was pushing the little ball in, the reverse lights would work. He screwed it back into the tranny, didn't work.

It started raining and the hail is on its way so we put my truck back in the garage.
We will get back under it tomorrow and redo the process. The previous owner replaced the clutch plate (?), could it be misaligned and not Be hitting the little ball?

If by "clutch plate" they meant the pressure plate or the clutch disk itself, well that has no effect on the internals of the trans.

Its easy enough to take the shifter off and put it back on to be sure. The hardest part is getting all the damn screws out that hold the rubber boot to the body (there's at least 8 of them; if they got them all back in). Then there are 4 bolts/nuts that hold the shifter to the trans itself. Once out, there is a hex nylon nut that the shifter pushes around. This sits on a shaft that runs from side to side. On the ends of the shaft, there should be nylon U-shaped pieces. These hold the shaft in place. I know this is hard to picture, but you'll see what I mean.

I don't know why they would have taken the shifter off other than to fill the trans back up (that's the easiest way; I did it that way on my S10). To get the trans out, all you have to do is unscrew the knob/extension and put it in 3rd (usually).

I don't know what actually presses on the ball. I don't think the shifter itself does. It might be a linkage/the gears themselves that push on it.

Not much else I know. If I would have known that little thing was it, I would have fixed it on my first S10, but I found out about it with this S10 and switching it out fixed it. I have yet to not have backup lights.



Organization is key. I got a new external drive and spent 3 days re-organizing it.
