Since I got my truck back on the road, remanned rear end and all, it kinda gave me some perspective. As long as I continue to use it as my daily driver, I doubt I get to crazy with modding it much more. So..... I'm thinking of turning my attention to another truck that I have always thought about building. My grandpa has a 87 single cab F350 dually with a flatbed farm truck that I would love to restore/build. It ran a year or two ago when it was parked, by me, but since he has an 05 F350 the old truck has been retired. It has the original 460 in it with a rebuilt 5 speed from jasper. The truck and original 460 has over 300k plus miles. It has really been worked hard pulling cattle trailers, and hauling no telling how many rolls of hay. I have a lot of sentimental value with the truck. I learned to drive a stick in it, and have a lot of good memories with my grandpa in it.

Anyhow to cut a long story short, the body is ok, has some dents and stuff, but there is aftermarket out there for the body of the truck, LMC etc. The engine would obviously need to be rebuilt, and I would probably have the tranny gone through, maybe beefed up. The electrical needs a complete redo, no gages work, and the lights cut in and out. New interior and I would basically go through everything from the frame up.

My questions are does anyone have any experience with the 460? I know you can get some pretty big power from the BBF. That a lot of CI to work with..... I think that would be the start of the whole build. :tmc:

Nope..... Carbed.... The last year of it I believe, which I'm grateful for!

Then depending on your local smog laws you can go as wild as you want, with efi you are limited to what cams will work. Then there's the whole converting to mass air just to get a decent tune on it. Good luck! I had a carbed 460 in my tow truck and it was awesome. A good cam, headers, and a decent pair of heads is a good start. What carb does it have now? I'm guessing the factory Holley? :dunno:

I believe its the 4 barrel Holley. It's 260 miles away right now so I can't go run and look at it.

As far as smog laws, I'm in TN, I don't have emission testing or anything like that. I'm sure I can go pretty wild with it.

Oh and carb engines are new territory for me. So I've got a lot to learn. I understand how they work. I think starting on a pushrod carbed engine is a good way to get my feet wet with engine building.

Research as much as you can. There are plenty of guys on the Bronco forums running old school 460s with carbs. I recomend an edelbrock carb or a carter. I've had good luck with those.

I just got on another forum at 460ford and I'm reading up on there. It's a whole website dedicated to the 385 series engine.
