I am now thinking of instead of having 2 trucks and twice the insurance and whatnot, doing a motor/trans. swap into my gmc. I've did lots of research and there is quite a number of people who have done this very cleanly. The only major components I'll need is an nv4500 5-speed trans(hydraulics, clutch, etc.), driveshaft modifications?, and motor mounts.

But, before turning any screw, check with your local DMV if they will re-register your vehicle after the swap. Due to the age of the engine maybe you can get problems with emission enforcement...

Tyler, I used one on a daily basis when I was still in the Air Force. Those things got the snot beat out of them. The guys would drive them wide open when not towing anything. We used them to tow the jet engines from the flight line when they got removed from the air craft to the back shop where we worked on them, as well as to the test cell and then to the spare barn where we kept spare engines. Just before I retired they started getting in Ford F350's with the diesel engines in them.

Keep your GMC the way it is, IMO, nice and reliable.
Plus it has sentimental value. Keep it as your old reliable and toy with something else.
Your GMC is WAY WAY WAY too clean to even think about touching!!!

If you really want to do the swap in a GMT400, get another truck and do it. You'll still have 2 trucks, but it's well worth it to have a project/fun truck and a reliable DD. When I got quotes from Progressive for having insurance on both my trucks at once, it was only a $200/6mo increase over just having one. Check it out. You might be surprised on the break you get for multiple vehicles.
