Gary, I'm "thinking" I havevthe G80. But I think it's on its last leg. With this recent snow I have noticed something. When I get on it one wheel will spin. I let off then get on it again and I'm fish tailing. But more so one wheel will spin. Is this what yours was kinda doing? Only engaging some times? Also I found a full floating rear end. I currently have a semi floating one so there will be a swap some time in the future.

Funny thing...when going straight(in sloppy mud)and stomping on the skinny pedal both wheels would spin equally, but get some articulation involved and one wheel would spin feeely....that's when I figured the G80 wasn't working properly.A full floater 14 bolt axle is about as good as it gets for a GM truck,is that axle yuo found from a truck about your year? They might be a little different when GM went ot the GMT400s,not sure.I wonder if a 14 bolt FF from a '88-'91 pickup wolud fit?:dunno:

I see complete axles all the time here on CL....

For example:http://ventura.craigslist.org/pts/2677239426.html

My buddy that found the axle said it was like a 88-89. He said it should work. It's from another 2500 burb. Before we do the swap we will definitely make sure it will work first.

Sounds like I'm kin of on the same boat. Although i know i have a G80 i spun the tires on some snow and only one wheel spun but I know for a fact it was working this summer when they'd spin on gravel. :dunno: I've heard lots of stories like this though were g80's stop working or simply grenade.

Be sure to remove the cover and check it good...gears & bearings for sure.As for the G80,if it is one you won't be able to see any spider gears, they're all inside the housing that the ring gear bolts to(look back at my pics).

Try a little articulation....try climbing a hill like in Lee's siggy,if one wheel spins and won't lock up something's wrong. It should work just like in my little vid.

Yeah we will go through it and check everything. Make sure the gear ratio is the same and all.

Update:(meant to do this last week)

Went to the desert for T'Day weekend with my toy hauler in tow. It's about a 200 mile round trip and takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours(depending on how many pee stops for kids )to get there. There were hardly and winds kicking up so I got the best mpgs I've ever gotten towing the trailer.Well, the diff did great. No noise,no unusual sounds at all.Wifey and I took it off-roading a little and everything worked great. So it looks like I did a good job

Now for the front diff........
