Down here in TX we do not have a lot of rust issues, unless you are in the panhandle, or along the coast.

No problem with mine rusting, and my truck is 12 years old. :dunno:

Well it's a pretty common problem with these vehicles. Do a quick Google search (like I did at the time) and find lots of complaints. :(

To keep people from stealing your spare tire.
I suppose people will steal anything if they want it bad enough but I would think a smart person would take the aluminum wheels off the truck itself since theyre worth more and the tire isn't dryrotted.

I want to be able to get it off if I ever need to. After trying to get it down with no luck on the shoulder of a 65 mph highway I decided I needed to be able to get it off when necessary.

I kept the cover for the key hole and just stuck a bolt in it with a plastic wing nut on it, looks completely stock but atleast I can get the tire off. I couldn't make the lock work.
