Hill climbing is an increasingly-popular sport where the aim is simple; get to the top of the hill as fast as possible. From stock trucks to custom tube-frame chassis, you can invest as much money as you have into a hill climbing rig. Naturally, four-wheel drive provides a competitive advantage, and some people would say it is absolutely mandatory for anyone thinking about tackling a tough hill.

Some people, but not all. Tom Anthony, owner of the “Damn Black Chevy”, found himself without four-wheel drive at a recent hill climbing excursion. But that didn’t stop his 1,200 horsepower nitrous-injected Chevy pickup from powering its way to the top of this sandy hill.

Damn Black Chevy is a bit of a YouTube star, and with good reason. Powered by a big-block 565 cubic-inch engine, and injected with nitrous, this hill climbing, mud-bogging pickup packs over 1,200 horsepower. And for a while it was running a stock Turbo 400 automatic, though now it packs a beefed up unit that is all but indestructible.

We’re not sure what happened to Damn Black Chevy’s 4×4 system, but as you can clearly see in this video, it only took two wheels to get the truck to the top of the hill. That is thanks to the raw, brute torque of a nitrous-injected Chevy big block. 4×4? Who needs 4×4? Not that Damn Black Chevy, that’s for sure
