Nick,if you ever want to increase the load capicity I have six extra leafs(three each side) I removed from my '77 if you want 'em,free. They were put in the spring pack so it could carry a huge camper and not squat.I removed 'em after I bought the old RV and would never be using the camper again.

an old pic..(taken maybe fifteen years ago)

I appreciate the offer. This truck is already a camper special, and it's got some pretty beefy leafs under there. Was yours a camper special that you added leafs to?

Also, why did you get rid of the old truck, was it repairable?

One more thing...got any info on those campers?

Were they dealer items, or did you buy them separate?
Didn't they make them so that the can could heat and cool them?

Also, why aren't they popular anymore? 5th wheel take their place?

Those campers are still popular. Many manufactures make them, Scott likes em and has had a few recently I believe. They are great for towing (boats, bikes, cars, etc.) and having a place to stay.

Just remove the chrome strips IMO. It'd still be original and look a lot better too :D

My son ran it into a tree and hit directly at the front of the left frame rail.Almost all of the engine bay got all jacked up.I'm sure the frame was bent bad,the cab was jacked so bad the passenger door wouldn't even open. It's worse than it looked.

Campers are still made and I see 'em all the time here.I liked the idea of a slide in camper because it can be removed and the truck can be used for hauling other things. The one I had had a rooftop A/C unit that worked great when plugged into 110v.However it didn't have a generator for 110,I used a small portable one that plugged into a socket(same one for shore power) on the outside of the camper. Then I had full 110 power in the sockets inside the camper. The lights would still be on 12v power via an inverter however.I know how this all works but hard for me to explain, maybe someone else could do a better job of it.I think Scott had a slide in camper at one time, maybe he'll chime in.

Also, even though your truck is a Camper Special it does have it's limits. My camper was very large(& very heavy) and extended three feet past the bed(& needed those extra leafs)...I had a slide it extended bumper that I used to hook up a trailer to so I could haul my bikes to the desert.I used it for many years as I & a buddy were the only ones who went to our friends' desert campouts.

The only way wifey would go again(she went once in '95,I think)was if she had a bigger place to sleep, cook, sit, have a bigger bathroom & shower.Hence the RV and the demise of the camper.

Yes,mine was a Camper Special 8,200 GVW,454,TH400,A/C,CC and everything worked...185,000 miles on it when Chris totaled it two years ago...

Sorry for the long post :(
