Right before I had to replace my battery, my fuel gauge was acting all crazy, bouncing all around. Well, after I replaced the battery it quit doing it for a couple of days, but now it's right back to doing it. It doesn't do it while I'm driving, just on start up in the morning, and occasionally when I'm sitting still. Anybody have any ideas? I've heard of the fuel level sensor, but unless it's on the fuel pump, I don't have a clue where it is at. The fuel pump doesn't seem to be acting up. :dunno:

It's the sending unit. Had the same deal on my '99 GMC. I just lived with it until I traded it in. It's in the fuel tank so you'd have to either drop the tank or remove the bed to access it. If you do it yourself most people recommend replacing the fuel pump as well while your there depending on what your mileage is.

Fwonk it. I'll live with it until I have to replace the fuel pump. Thanks Scott.

Another thing I did was keep track of the mileage between fill-ups in case the gauge wasn't reading right so I didn't run out of gas.

I always do that. I reset the trip meter every time I fill up, and I fill up every time I get gas.

You betcha
I had that going on for 2 years with my '00 Sierra. Then one day the fuel pump died and fixed that problem!

I must have a guage issue with the Tahoe then. I put a new pump/sender in recently, and the guage is STILL off by a quarter tank. LFL comes on at 20 gallons.

Bad ground and a dying alt can make the fuel guage go wonky sometimes...

Scott, that sounds like a computer issue... Unless your needle jumped on its spindle...

I say mines on crack also.

But that's just my excuse for getting 6-10 mpg since I upgraded tires/wheels.
