An old pump BB gun (the kind you pump up 8 or 10 times) works great. One pump doesn't penetrate, but it stings like hell. Cats aren't stupid. They generally don't return after one or two BBs off of the butt.

We have the same problem around here, but we also have Bald Eagle's too, most cats don't last past 6 months...lol, lost cat sign's go up regularly around here...
