Caitlin's truck has this code and is having a problem pumping gas. The gas nozzle keeps kicking off as if the tank is full, but it is empty. She has to let the gas barely trickle out of the nozzle to get any gas in the tank. It took her 15 mins to pump $10 worth of gas the other day. From my reading it seems there are quite a few things it could be? :frustration:

A couple questions:

1. How many times has this happened?

2. Has this happened at different stations?

Has the filler pipe for the tank gotten pinched?

I had that happened to me on my Chevy 2500 about 4 yrs ago after the fuel filter had been replaced for the 5th time in less that a yr and 25,000 miles in it. What happened was that the technicians kinked the hose while they re-installed the gas tank. I had to tow my truck back to the dealer cause I couldn't put gas in it.
If the vehicle had been serviced recently for fuel filter make sure hose isn't kinked.

Has the filler pipe for the tank gotten pinched?

The code has only illuminated twice. The first time I made sure the gas cap was tightened and cleared the code.
It has only happened twice, she has been riding with me to work since her truck is on E. Both of the times were at different stations.
I don't think the filler pipe has been damaged at all, but I could be wrong. I am going to take a gander at it tomorrow. My buddy with the lift in his garage is going to give me a hand. Thanks for the suggestions.

The evap vent solenoid valve is intermittently acting up. This shuts off the tank vent tube and makes the fill tube fool the nozzle into thinking the tank is full because of the back pressure. The vent tube could also be plugged with something. It's like using a gas can without opening the vent cap - you don't get smooth (or fast) flow without a vent. In a pinch the valve can be cleaned or just replace it for around $40. A 0446 code comes up when the valve sticks open - 0442 when sticks closed. Or maybe the other way around. I get confused a lot without my meds. Ed

Do you have a part #?
I checked a bunch of the tubes/hoses going into and out of the gas tank. I unplugged both sides and blew air through them, plugged them all back in and the truck filled up fine. I cleared the code and am waiting to the next time she fills up to see if it comes back.

Evap Vent Valve (New & Improved) P/N 10382105
Valve bracket for above P/N 15105605

Evap Solenoid (New New & Improved #25932571
I don't know what bracket the last one takes. People have just been using cable ties.

I took mine apart and cleaned it real well about 10k miles ago when it started throwing codes. It should be located somewhere to the rear of the fuel tank and is about the size of a pack of smokes with a rigid rubber tube and a small wire harness attached.

GMPartsDirect shows both for about $15
