my uncle has a 03 suburban 5.3.. that has been babied his whole life by him and has lik almost 400k on original engine.........and it sounds like a diesel on cold start ups..
he owns a heating and air bussiness... and his workers and him got into an gas explosion last winter.. and i had to drive that suburban home from the owners house... next day i drove it to his house ... when i started it up... i thought it was going to come apart.. but he said its did that since like 200k......i was scared...
I have CSK only during cold weather and it seems to last no longer than 15-20 seconds on average. Mine just started it in the last few weeks when the temps have dropped down into the 30's. My '02 and '07 both had CSK but no issues with either truck.
I'm actually in a class with a former GM mechanic of 20+ years. According to him, GM went to the shorter piston skirt in the LS motors to save money, increase power, and increase efficiency (they only increased because the engine isn't moving as much mass). He also said that from day one, customers were bringing in their brand new trucks complaining about engine noise. -- I guess you can take this however you'd like.
My '98 with the 350cu L31 motor has CSK, but I think its due to 118k miles. My '97 with the V6 (exactly the same as my 350 minus 2 cylinders) has no knock what so ever with 177k miles.
I noticed this morning that I hear it when its cold and I start the truck but the second I put it in reverse to back out of the driveway it is gone. Why would this be? Because I'm putting a load on the engine at that point?
