Piston slap:

Your engine may or may not make a noise when started from cold that does absolutely no damage to said motor...

I definitely hear this piston slap on cold mornings. Should the fact that my engine has started using oil in the past 6 months cause concern? It is still below the 2 quarts per 3000 miles that GM says is ok...but that seems a little excessive to me. I was wondering if this noise and the oil consumption could be related?

My 07 failed a set of the AFM lifters. Have you had it checked for this issue?

Do you have AFM? If so that could be the problem with using oil.

Mine has piston slap, but will only do it if it is in the 50's or cooler outside. The longest it has done it was about 45 seconds. :dunno:

The noise is from when the piston gets bottom dead center, with the short piston skirt it will rock just a bit in the bore and cause the noise. As the engine warms up and the piston expands the clearances will be perfect and the noise usually goes away. I wouldn't attribute this noise to oil consumption though. Mine has always done it and still to this day doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. And I go 7500 miles between changes.

I think I will have to make an appt to get it looked at then. I never took it in because GM said it was within spec on consumption. Need to get the screech (due to the missing "felt") fixed too so between Christmas and New Years is as good a time as any since I'm off work.

Yup sure do. I've read some about this issue here and on TMC previously. Just hoped it wouldn't happen to me haha.

My 05 had it somewhat, but my 07 is really quiet - even cold.

As I understand it, there was a piston skirt redesign in 06 that should have solved this.

My 97 was too beat to hell to determine the cause but it definitely had a knock. My 00 Yukon had it very slightly when it was balls cold but it cleared up within 30ish seconds. Haven't really driven the new one that much since it's been cold so I haven't noticed if it does or not.
