I definitely hear this piston slap on cold mornings. Should the fact that my engine has started using oil in the past 6 months cause concern? It is still below the 2 quarts per 3000 miles that GM says is ok...but that seems a little excessive to me. I was wondering if this noise and the oil consumption could be related?

The noise is from when the piston gets bottom dead center, with the short piston skirt it will rock just a bit in the bore and cause the noise. As the engine warms up and the piston expands the clearances will be perfect and the noise usually goes away. I wouldn't attribute this noise to oil consumption though. Mine has always done it and still to this day doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. And I go 7500 miles between changes.I definitely hear this piston slap on cold mornings. Do you have AFM? If so that could be the problem with using oil.
