Somy gas needle started moving at a high frequency at the correct fuel level and makes a clicking noise. Whats causing this?

likley a bad connection or a failure within the actuator in the cluster. what truck are we woring on joshua?

check connetions of te plug in behind the cluster, if good check resistance there to sending unit, if its good back to the sending unit the cluster is probly giving it up.

Sounds like a faulty gauge to me... but that's only a guess. You might check and make sure all connections going to the tank are secure (especially grounds). If it still reads fuel level and has this issue it sounds like the gauge.

EDIT: Like he said above me!

If I remember correctly, the surround in front needs to come off and the cluster pulls out from the front on those.

yeah, tilt your steering wheel down, shift your shifter (if an auto) down to 1, with a little pulling the dash should pop out, undo any electrical ennections (ligting, cargo lap, or 4wd switch if equipt)

then i beleive there should be 4 or 6 bolts holding the cluster in place, with the bolts out it should come outenough to check the connections, i don`t know which wire you will have to check for resistance of the sending unit (i sold my 98 GM manuals :frustration: )

To remove the cluster
1) Tilt wheel down
2) put in gear selector in 1st
3) remove trim bezel (only clips in)
4) unplug headlight switch, passenger airbag shut off, 4x4, cargo light, and/or fog light
5) pull the top of the trim piece out first towards you
6) lift up and out (make sure the air vents are clear; sometimes they hang up a little)
now for the cluster
7) remove 4 or 6 screws (I think they are 7mm)
8) lift out cluster
taking apart cluster
9) take out 4 or 6 screws to remove the clear cover
10) use a fork and slide it behind the clear piece that is behind the black face, but in front of the white/tan backing thingy (very techincal), along the edges

The entire thing should come out. The only thing holding the gauges to the back cover thing is a bunch of metal pins that connect the gauges to the back cover. Some times they can be hard, but take your time and work your way around the entire thing. It will come out, just have patience.

If you need to replace a gauge motor, use a fork to pop off the needle.
