If the CV comes apart, you will have a loose half-shaft flapping around whether you are in 2wd or 4wd. On the Dodges, the passenger side is also where the actuator is, so you might do some damage to that as well, I haven't looked real close at how it is mounted (yours is probably different than mine anyway). 4wd and bouncing through mud will put more stress on it and could lead to a faster failure, but it could fail in 2wd driving down the highway too. Get it fixed as quick as possible!

Oh, BTW, Napa used to have a lifetime replacement on their CV's (I think they still do). I used to buy them there when I was doing ranch work and we seemed to have them fail fairly regularly (pack with snow and tear the boots, or get sticks wedged into them, mud, etc.). They were a little more expensive than their standard price, but once you bought them, everytime something went wrong with one, you just brought it back in and they replaced it free. All you were out was the time of changing them out. I got where I could swap a CV in a GM 3/4 ton in about 30-45 minutes total.
