Hey everyone. I currently have my CDL with air brake cert. I am going to add the Tanker cert. next week. My question is for HazMat drivers. The way my book sounded I had to take classes on a regular basis to keep my HazMat. Is this true? I thought you took the test then had the cert end of story and it was your responcibility to know what you were hauling. Any help would be great. I want to add my HazMat if it's not a huge PITA.:tmc:

Maybe somebody else will have better and more up to date information since I let mine go when they told me I had to be fingerprinted just to have hazmat but I didn't have to retake the class ever

I used to have my HazMat, I let it drop when they changed the testing/background procedures. The letter I received at the time (~5 years ago) said that due to security restrictions after 9/11 all HazMat endorsements would now require a full background investigation (~$350) and would also require re-testing every 4 years. I did not use my CDL at all (had to get it when I worked for a grain/fertilizer co) so I ended up letting the whole thing go. I haven't kept up with any of the newer regulations, and I would imagine there is some variability from state to state.

Thats how PA made it sound. If thats the case it's not worth it to just get it. I will get it if the job requires but in the meantime it does not make sense to just have it.

My understanding was that you had to attend a certain amount of classes/sessions to earn credits. But if you would have missed the class that came around every 6 months or so you would come up short when you went to renew your license. Not only would you have to retake the test but you would also have to meet a certain amount of credits.

Don't think of a class like a semester but more like a 3-4 hr event that comes around..

That was just my thought about it. I could be wrong.

Thanks Brian. They said I had to take classes to stay updated. I was wondering if I was going to have to pay for them, do them through the union or something like that.

Have to retake the test every 4 years in Wisconsin. No classes, just pass the written test.
