There is probably a 75% chance that there was not a diesel in it to begin with...
Now I would agree with you if you were using the 12v for tractor pulling but in my line of work and the dump trucks that I have had I have had the worst luck with anything cummins. The 6.5 TD for me has never let me down...
My 3500hd was rated for 10k lbs but I tell you I have had it pulling 25k between trailer and dumper and it gets the job done for the past 172k miles... It ain't no Dmax... That's fo sure..

Cummins does not like steady RPM on their engines not designed for it

We have Cummins engines running crushers and screeners at work. They run at 1800-2100 RPM all day long and love it. We do not have a lot of problems with them. Deutz on the other hand...
It could be a Ford problem... But I used to run a F650 that had the cummins 5.9 in it. It was maintained like if I owned it but it was nothing but problems. I have never been stranded or pissed off at a truck in my life like these ones.
I would be the first to tell you that it seems that my 366 2 ton TopKick has more power then those trucks... I feel a lot more comfortable pulling our bobcat and loaded with soil then that those 650's...
Could be the gearing too...
