If that thing has a trip computer, he's probably going by that and the "chip" probably has it all fWONked up.. 
My ex bosses truck is a 2003 and it would read crazy numbers like that. It was always less 10-15 mpg's if you calculated the number in your head or for this guy who might need a calculator.
