I finally got the last part I need to rebuild the 727 in my 72 D200. However, I spoke to the builder last night and he enlightened me on something I had not previously considered. He explained the benefits of having a lock up tranny over what I have. I like what he had to say but am still unsure on how it works and why I should do it. Right up front, I have no money left to spend on this rebuild. And, I already have a time set up to use my buddy’s shop to do the job. So delaying it even longer while I gather yet more parts does not sit favorably with me. These are my questions:
This is a3/4 ton truck with a 2BBL 318. Even though I do plan to pull trailers and use it like a truck, it has been in my family since it was special ordered by my granddaddy. I use it, but I also baby it. What benefits would I see in a lock up tranny under those conditions?
Would those benefits pay for themselves in a timely manner?
If I do go through with it, I understand my best bet is to get a core 727 that has lock up capabilities. If I do, what year and model vehicles should I look for? How do I know if it is a lock up core when I find it?
What are some downfalls to going through with this mod? Are there any reasons I may want to avoid doing it?
This is my first ever Dodge project. And even though I am aware of lock up trannies I never really learned how they work or why. So please dumb down your responses so that I may make a well informed decision before committing to this.

No turbo, just a stock 2BBL 318. I am not seeing much of as reason to delay this biuld anyway. I think I will just stick with what I have.

Thats for the best for what you are doing TBH. I love old Dodges. Used to have a 76 Crew Cab 318 long wheel base. The truck was a damn tank.

I do not want to over complicate this truck. I like how simple and clean it is.
