Bus to RV conversion question thread

I think it's a great idea. I always wanted to do something like that with a bus. You should see the look I get in my house when I bring it up.

I've seen a few of those. I love them. Buses are dirty cheap, just make sure you buy hydraulic and not air brakes so you don't need a CDL and then have it registered as an RV.

You don't need a CDL if it is an RV with air brakes.

But you do need a CDL to drive it around as you work on it until you get it to be something the police department will sign off on as an RV. I did not realize that the air brakes were cool once it was an RV though. That's nice to know.

I would certainly risk the ticket. Hydraulic brakes are an expensive joke on vehicles of that size.

You'd know better than I. Ours never had a problem, fortunately.

Not sure. It could, but after a little searching it does appear that vehicles for personal use are generally exempt from CDL requirements given their use is not commercial.

CDL requirements for RVs? No. You don't need one. Any blind idiot with enough cash can go buy a 50,000 # coach and drive it through your house with little or no training.

I love this country.

To drive a Motorhome in Texas, the TXDOT office told me:
1. If it weighs less than 26000 gross, you can drive it with a regular drivers license - EVEN IF IT HAS AIR BRAKES.
2. If it weighs more than 26000 gross you need a CDL-B. I don't know what the "B" stands for, but will look it up.

Obviously, you'll want to double-check, but it seems positive.
