Blew Rear Diff

Just blew out the rear diff in the '69 Rover. But I have to say 42 years is a long time for one to keep up the abuse of a daily driver, off roader, and in the '70's a brush hogger for the FL Hwy Dept. So, I'm not that depressed. But those EVN's are a bitch to get into to start trouble shooting. 1.5 hours in: drive shaft dropped and still trying to remove banjo nuts/plates to remove casing to inspect. This is a full floating axle, so it should be something simple/cheap to fix.

Getting ready to take pics after bath is run for the little guy.

Thinking it's a spider gear. No shaving were in the fluids at all. But this could also be caused by years of wear and tear. There was now noises just a small clunk (nothing more than normal shifting) from reverse to first. Have 2 Hi and 2 Low, but nothing else.

I do know that if this was a new truck, that was 40 years from now, I'd just rather . I really don't think my new Landie will make it for so long. These old ones are tanks and bitches to pull apart.

Found out the left side axle was busted off. Now we have to figure out how to remove busted end out of the diff gears to replace. Not an easy chore. This is like working on a cast iron tank!!!!! fWONking tough shit!!!!

Just stripped down the diff and we were able to get the 2" piece of axle shaft out of the diff gears. No damage to other gears/teeth or bearing races. Should just be able to replace left hand floating axle and rebuild diff cleanly. Excuse all the goop on the bench, most is dried paint and all parts are in an nice oil bath until new parts come in.
