Alright so this might sound stupid and over the top but My dad gave me his truck its 96 chevy cheyenne(silverado) and its 2wd. well i thought at first maybe he'd be alright with selling it and buying a 4wd combined with the money i make this summer.. he didn't like that idea haha so I was wondering what I would need to turn my truck into a 4wd if at all possible. Its a 96' chevy cheyenne(silverado) 2500 long box ext. cab 2wd. Lucky for me my uncle owns a napa auto parts and my other uncle is a mechanic so its ot hard to find parts and help if i need it. ;) if you have any suggestions please post anything.

The ONLY way to make that truck 4WD is a custom straight axle conversion. The frame is not the same as the 4WD version of that same year. Lots of fabrication, a transmission/transfer case swap and some more fabrication to make it a 4WD.

Put your body on a 4WD frame.
Years ago, I changed over a 70 chevy 2WD with 4WD running gear from a 71 GMC and it was a pain in the ass.

Only two sane possibilities: Get used to it being a 2WD (which isn't soo bad), or get another truck.

so does this mean I'd need to buy a new tranny =S and the transfer case I knew that had to be swapped.

I got the truck for free :) . plus my pops said if I sell the truck hes keeping the money. so basically Im stuck... with 2wd and just doin what i can or 4wd and no other cool upgrades. becuase 4wd is going to cost me lots of time and money.. I think im going to stick with 2wd and just stick with my initial plan. =S
