I remember stories of early early Saturn cars where people slammed the door on really cold days and the door skin broke and fell off. GM changed the product but that had to be embarrassing.

So THAT'S why some tailgates look like that. I always wondered what they were, I thought it was an aftermarket product designed to give Daddy an aneurysm.

I've seen a probably 5 or so of those around here over a period of a few years. Very easy to recognize with the raised lettering. I kind of like the concept, but really don't know how they'd hold up to constant abuse.

Here is an example of a Pro-Tec bed for anyone who is unfamiliar.

Hey Motorhead. You own one? How is it?

I've seen a probably 5 or so of those around here over a period of a few years. Very easy to recognize with the raised lettering. I kind of like the concept, but really don't know how they'd hold up to constant abuse.

Sorry I should have clarified . Look at my Profile. I had up loaded pics of it disassembled prior to posting

I don't take offense from metal bed owners so don't take my opinion as an offensive statement.

I NEVER heard of it before I bought this and now I WOULDN'T trade it for a hunk of metal.

Yeah the skins are similar to fiberglass(note the impact foam pieces. I am missing one at $25 special order from GM) but I venture to say the box itself is more durable than a metal one. The previous owner loaded and unloaded 4 wheelers in the back alot and it has some scratching but no biggie(it doesn't rust because it's not metal) I think a ball peen hammer(or regular) could bang up a metal bed before you hurt this one(NO I don't have the balls to test that theory.)

I don't have to run out and get (or save for) Line-X.

I have almost NO fender wells on the inside to be a PITA.

The Pro-tec tailgate load-carrying capacity is 1,000 lbs. compared to 600 lbs. for the steel counterpart.

As stated on the ease of replacement. How much $$ and time if someone(GOD FORBID) caved in a normal box(fenders but not bed itself)? I'm out $525 for one or $900 for two($125 shipping on 1 or 2) plus paint. I can swap out the skins in under an hour per(I have all ready done it once. It was my first time OBVIOUSLY) VERY little guidence on this from the previous owner and Chilton's/Haynes has no section for it.

It is easy to pass judgement on it (I know I said "plastic"? Are you F'n kidding me?) without seeing it but as I said I wouldn't trade it for a metal one..

I can see where this would be a really good thing in areas where rust is an issue. It's kinda cool just because it's different too.

It's not heaven . . . it's Iowa!
Part of me thinks this is the worst idea ever to come out of GM. And that includes those Sunbirds and such in the 80's/90's.

The other part of me thinks it's a stroke of genius! No rust, no dents, no problems!

:dunno:

I think it would really matter a lot WHAT you do with your truck. It would work perfectly for me. My truck hasn't hauled anything more than a suitcase or an occasional piece of furniture in 2.5 years!

Well. I have hauled a few large items... just not much. I can't be without a truck.
