Added another member to the fleet.

Youngest daughter got her license a couple months ago. Now she just landed her first job and will need a car. Spent a couple weeks looking for a $2-3k dollar reliable car. LOTS of junk out there in that price range, most with well over 150k miles.

Looked at a 2004 Kia Optima with 110k miles for $1888. Not pretty (actually quite ugly) but it seemed reliable and ran/drove fine. Upon further inspection though, I noticed the engine had a nice coating of oil, on the outside, and the oil pan was wet too. And you all know how I feel about leaky cars. I passed.

Came across this 2000 Mitsubishi Galant last week. 118k miles for $2k. Has some rust, but looks great from 20ft. Runs perfect (way smoother than the Kia). AND the engine bay is dry as a bone, as is the bottom of the engine and undercarriage. This car has never leaked a drop.

Should be a good reliable car to get her through high school and college.

I'm sure she'll enjoy it. Don't know much about Mitsubishi's but it looks like a decent car, especially for $2k.

He also missed the fact that this thread is directed towards the purchase of the car. There's no doubt in my mind that Jeff's daughter will make it through highschool just fine but there is question if the car will graduate with honors passed highschool.

Well, Brain, it may not have the Uber-reliability and longevity of a mighty Chebby, but they do regularly go 300K miles.

A co-worker here just finally traded his 2003 Galant for a BMW. He drove his through college (he graduated from Madison a few years ago) and his had over 200k on it and he never had any major issues, in fact, the only issue he ever had was his AC stopped working.
